Thread: How to know if razor needs to be honed

hey everyone, I recently recieved my new razor, a dovo reneissence (spelling?), I bought it off ebay, however I dont know if it needs to be honed, the razor is brand new, however it could be a pre-honed one??? I dont know how to tell, is there a better way to check than using it and counting the damages to your face, could really use the advice as I really REALLY want to use it, its taunting me. thanks for reading and i look forward to some advice

mostly they come not shave ready but maybe seller did make it(usually seller mention it on item description)shave ready.The best way to test is shave it .it will let you know it is shave ready or not.

If the razor is brand new from the factory, it needs to be honed. If not, the only way to tell is to shave with it. It is highly likely that you will need to have it honed or hone it yourself, but there is no need to ignore it if you wish to try and shave with it. Just understand if it is your first shave there are a ton of factors that might make it less than perfect and a non-shave ready blade could really irritate your face. A few questions:

Do you have a true shave ready blade to compare it too?

Where are you located? (there might be someone close who can help!)

Have you shaved with a straight before?

I will say, that I shaved with my TI super gnome straight from the factory despite knowing that it wasn't shave ready. The result was a pully, less than close or comfortable shave; however, I didn't expect anything more and was satisfied with the experience as a less than perfect one. Everyone has a different path to Shave-vana!

*EDIT* I see you have a Wapi honed by Mike. You should know then, what a decent shave feels like!

I think that Rob covered all the points that I might have covered.
From what you related, I would recommend that you get it honed.
Not clear from your post what your experience level is... do you have a strop for maintenance after it is honed?
