Stop faffing about and get a big wedge. Tough beard? Problem solved. Or of course I can hone 'em for you......

If you enjoy using a cartridge razor and finishing with a straight, then do what feels good. I would however try getting my straight honed by one of the pros. Some of the guys will finish it on Cromium Oxide to give it a really fine polish. Once you have a really nice edge on your blade, you may want to experiment a bit with doing your whole shave with your straight. Let us know how it works out for you...
Bottom line is: do what works for you, enjoy yourself!

If you have doubts about the sharpness of your blade, definitely get it honed before worrying about your technique. After that, I would suggest that your reverse your order. That is, if your goal is to switch to straights, which darn well better be your goal, then you should see how much you can accomplish with your straight razor first. After that, you can clean up any shortcomings with your cartridge razor. Eventually you should be able to toss the cartridge altogether.
