    Default Over Zealous Newb

    Howdy all,

So as the title suggests, I got a little too excited when I started getting into straights, and spent a little more money than I should have. I have two razors, a TM 4sided paddle strop, and a few other things I need to sell to recover some money. Would it be better to sell here or ebay?
Any advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated!

    V/R,
    Scott

It depends on what you have.

I am sure you can get a fair price if you offer to the SRP community... At the least, you can have an idea of what the market is willing to pay.

I know I have paid way less on Ebay than what I percieve the value to be ... simply because there was no real interest during the auction.

Then again, the reserves were set pretty low.

I might be interested in the strop, actually.

    Have any pics?

Nothing says that you cannot try it in both places. On ebay, you may want to set a minimum so that the item does not sell for less than you might want for it. If you post it here, you should be able to get a reasonable price for a product that is partialy used or equipment that is used. Folks may want to dicker with you a little and you will have to decide what you are willing to take.

No fees here. Try here first and if you can't get what you want for the stuff, then try e-Bay.

Obviously some members of this forum can relate to being overzealous in their purchases. No one needs more than 7 ( at most ) razors or more than a few hones but some of us have a few more than that.

I guess my first thought is, are you selling because you need the money or because you have lost interest in the straights? You mentioned two razors and a TM strop. These could be considered to be part of the essential list, depending on what else you have. I don't know what else you want to get rid of but my question remains, why? I'm not being nosy, I'm just wondering if anyone on this forum can help you change your mind in case you are having a problem with your straights.

Thanks for the responses so far!

This is a pic of the paddle strop, three sides for pastes, one for regular stropping. The pic is from who I purchased it from in this forum. I haven't touched it, and was bought with the description of "a nearly new (like two months old) Tony Miller Paddle Strop with 3 sides pasted" along with several pastes for it. Whiskers I'll take some more pics. if you'd like.

Utopian- No I definitely have not lost interest, just spent to much money before I realized I didn't need too. I plan to keep two wapi's to learn with and a TM hanging strop, as well as a Bengall to work on honing with, so I'll still have the basics. Currently I am getting ready to go back to college, and my '98 explorer is starting to have some issues, so any money I can salvage would be helpful; you can see my dilemma.

    -----
List of what I intend to part ways with:
-Simmon's HDWE Co.- Barber's pet straight razor
-Assy Shaheen- Liberty Bell straight razor [w/original box]
    -TM 4-sided strop w/pastes
-Theirs Issard Double sided sharpening strop w/case [from classicshaving.com] w/diamond sharpening paste .5 micron and dovo red paste applied /included.
    ----

Long list and I am a bit embarrassed to see the results of my carelessness.
As soon as I can get my digital camera to work I'll probably start with the classifieds here.

Hey a lot of people can relate to getting carried away with this whole razor thing. The simple fact is that all you need is one or maybe two razors, a strop, and, at most, a couple of hones for a lifetime of shaving. Anything beyond that is superfluous. The fact is that shaving with a straight razor is much cheaper than shaving with a disposable razor IF and only IF you stick to the basic necessities.

I can definitely relate to short finances in school. I went to an Ivy League college (read expensive) and got $2000 of support from my parents for each of the first three years. I covered the rest with between 3 and 8 part-time jobs. Money was always an issue. I spent so much time paying for school that I had little time to get the benefit of the school. Now, college expenses are much higher so I guess I'm glad that I'm old (no I'm not).

The nice thing about this forum is that if you do get carried away like you believe that you have, you are likely to be able to find someone to take your items off of your hands to recoup most of your expenses.

Good luck with your next year of college.
