    Default Awright an Army guy!

Retired in 2001, Infantry until they wouldn't let me stay at Battalion or lower then Acquisition to try to get better stuff out of the labs to 'joe in the hole'.

Ah the joys of shaving in the field!!! Sweat, camo, no time, dull razor, electric clogged up from #1 and #2, I remember it well.....

Here's the answer - use a good double edge (they clog a LOT less, and the blades are easy to change in the dark) and hot water if you can get it. Do it BEFORE you crawl in the fart sack as you never know when they'll wake you up to do smething unplanned. Actually you do know, they wake you up almost every night...... Disposables are worthless if you have a grown up beard. It took me 3 or 4 to get one decent shave until I gave them up.

A signal mirror works great, the string lets you hang it from anything handy. If you have an aviator friend, they can probably get you one, otherwise Ranger Joe's or the Cav store.

Keep the electric for when you get called up to 'higher hindquarters' unexpectedly. Quick touch up is all you need to keep the colonel happy.

Damn shame they did away with the stell pot - tough to get a decent shave out of a canteen cup!!!!

Soldier on and God Bless You brother!!!

+1 on the face having to transition from electric to straight razor shaving. That's what I experienced. I big part of that is probably lack of proper technique at the beginning rather than blaming the straight.

IF you find that your first few shaves are not as you expected, we're here to help. IF they're still not pleasant, and the general consensus (remote chance here) is that your razor is maybe not as shave ready for you as it should be, I'm sure there are honemeisters that would volunteer to rehone your razor for you.

On shaving without a mirror; I can't see myself shaving without the help of a mirror, but I've found on quite a few occasions when I'm shaving and I'm in "the zone" (paying attention, always paying attention to where the edge and the spike is, but on a deeper level if that makes sense), that I realize that on a certain pass or two I had my eyes closed. Pretty cool.

I transitioned from an electric to a straight also but I had some experience with twin blade razors which was of no help at all. You will do fine as long as you don't push the learning curve too fast. I am a little slow so I took about 5 months to make the transition and get acceptable shaves over the entire face.
I did not even try the chin, neck, and upper lip at first. It allowed me to gain some technique and confidence.
Take it slow and enjoy the journey!

I had cause to borrow someones electric razor yesterday. From that I have learnt two things.

    1) There is technique and skill to be learnt in using a straight. The only skill in using an electric shaver is the ability to hold the razor.

    2) The electric took very little hair off and the shave I was left with made very little difference in the closeness of my shave.

You have a very steep learning curve ahead of you and I dont envy you. Anything I can do to help- just PM me or post a message.
