Thread: newbie: identify and tell me how much it's worth

OK. So I bought all of this for about 90 dollars. A hone a razor and a strop.


The razor. A friodur, 5 or 6/8, problem is, the scales are not centered so If im not closing it with carem the blade nicks them. Ill probably have them rescaled. The blade is perfect, even now can shave hair off my arm (not the HHT on the arm but a real shaving motion).

Could you tell me the model/price?









Now comes the strop:





Can you tell me something about it? The manufacturer, price...
One side is covered in CrO paste but is full of nicks. Other side is better, some CrO spots, but will prolly do with some olive oil...

the best part! The coticule! I at least hope it a coticule. Now some questions... Is it a combo or a plain yellow coticule? Do I need a slurry stone? Price? Manufaturer? Can I lap it with a wet-dry?

these are not in production so there are no prices on them. consider the prices what you paid for them, or if you intend to sell them (which it doesn't appear you do) you can find the market price on any particular day/time by listing them on ebay with 99c opening bid and no reserve.

it's excellent gear and with proper care can serve several lifetimes.

the stone is belgian natural combination stone - from where the blue and the yellow veins met.

shaving hair off your arm may not be sufficient - try it on your face. if it doesn't work, either mail it to somebody to hone it for you (there are few guys in europe) or try doing it yourself.

you may want to pick a slurry stone too - the combination ones that OLD_SCHOOL had recently seemed rather nice.

Yes, you got it, I dont want to sell. This is a present... for me I want to know the prices to see did I do well or bad. I assuse I did good. And the price was, I calculated, exactly 83 dollars.
The blade is around 1.6-1.7 cm. What size is that?
Also, are friodurs good shavers? Of course, I'll get it honed by someone who knows what hes doing...

For that lot 83 dollars is chump change! Both the razor and the coticule could easily go for 83 each on their own!

Ill use my friodur when I get custom scales I like the blade with the gold writings

You should be able to use a regular slurry stone (which I believe is a small piece of belgian yellow) on both sides. I personally like to use the same rubbing stone as the main stone. It looks like ChrisL finds the slurry better when you use blue on the blue, but I haven't done it differently to be able to tell.

BTW what are the dimensions of the stone?

The razor is 5/8 (shame you didn't pay attention to multiplication and division at school )

I actually like those scales. You may want to consider just getting the blade repinned in the scales. It is possible that the pin got slightly bent when it was originally pinned or that someone bent it a bit when tightening up the scales.

The hone is about 5X12cm.

Yes, the pin that holds the blade looks a little too far out on one side. Maybe if I try to knock it back in, so they are sticking the same amount at the sides?
