    Default OK, I've Had It.

OK, this razor is really starting to get on my nerves. I got it (Col. Conk 5/8) a few days ago, and I found out it needed honed. So today XMAN was gracious enough to hone it for me. It passed the hanging hair test and everything. So I take it home, give it a stropping, and when I use it, it's as though it was never sharpened in the first place. What gives? Did I do something wrong? The thing wouldn't even pass the hanging hair test when I tried it! And this is all in the space of a few hours! Help!

Sounds like a rolled edge. How did you strop it and on what?

when you next meet with X take your strop and perhaps he will help you with technique... maybe even the first shave you never know unless you ask

+1 don't feel too bad. lots of us do it starting out. After all, it only makes sense: if a little pressure on the strop is good, a lot more must be much better. Then you find out that the edge should just have the lightest possible pressure to maintain contact. PITA to learn these lessons in the beginning...

I was holding it so that it formed an A shape against my skin, when it should have been a V shape.

I rolled the edge on my first straight.....sounds like that may have been what happened to you. Don't give up - go back and see X again, I'm sure he'll get you straightened out in no time!

Hold the strop taut and don't press down on it with the razor. If it's suddenly not catching hairs, then you may have rolled the edge as the guys say. It may be that your hair is too different.

It sounds like you've got it working though, is that right? I'm around tomorrow. Call me if you still need help.

Yeah, you put the sharp side against your skin, not the rounded side or the handle!
