Default Need help with a razor purchase

I need some assistance with a razor purchase. Straight Razor Designs has a Dovo 5/8 Prima Klang Extra-Full Hollow and a Dovo 5/8 Micarta Stainless Steel. Either would suit my pocket book fine, I am just trying to find out for someone who is just getting started would either of these two be a better razor and secondly, I have read that shaving with an Extra-Full Hollow razor is more difficult as you are starting off?

Any assistance would be very helpful.

I've not read anything about an extra full hollow being more difficult as one is starting off - I'm curious about that though, do you remember where you read that?

I am 48 yo and have been shaving w/ str8s off and on since 1977. My first new razor was a Dovo 5/8 they are good razors and are as good or better than anything else to learn with. Whatever razor you choose, you will have to learn toshave with it, because it will not learn to shave you. If you like the DOVO get it.Hope this helps you. Please feel free to hang around for other replies there will be a lot of them more than likely.God Bless and good luck.

Both would be good razors. Just be sure to have them hone the razor for you. Direct from the factory they are not shaving sharp.

I'm just another noob who has shaved with a grand total of 2 different razors over nine shaves, one a full-hollow Dovo and the other an antique wedge (1/4 hollow? Less? I'm not sure.) What I can say from my limited experience is that the two razors definitely feel very different -- much less feedback from the wedge -- but that it's not really harder with one or the other. If I had to guess, I would suspect the difference between full hollow and extra-full to be pretty slight by comparison.

I have 2 dovo prima klangs and 1 dovo stainless. All are 5/8 and excellent razors. One of my prima klangs gets used about 4 times a week. I can't recommend them more highly. My dovo stainless is my travel razor. I'd say if you live in a more humid environment then get the stainless, as those are less likely to rust. Either purchase will give you a top quality razor though. Make sure to have it honed. My stainless shipped shave ready, but to date its the only razor that I've seen been shave ready from the factory.

    Good luck
