Thread: Microscopes

I haven't started shaving with a straight yet. "The blade is in the Mail".

I have noticed that quite a few posts on honing include discussion on using a microscope. As I intend to become a future honemeister , I fidured that if I started looking closely at the blade from the beginning, it would shorten my learning curve. As my razors are coming honed, I figure it would give me a good benchmark. Then I will pick up a blade from Ebay and practice.

To the question. What power scope would be what I want? Since the Radio Shack seems to be on the way out, I better have a back up plan.

Its all in the resolution not the magnification. With quality mag you can see more with 40x than you could with poor quality at 100x. I have a quality handlens that goes to 36x and I can see all I need to see for razor work. So that's your choice. Depending on the quality you want to spend your money on will depend the mag you need. It also matters what you want to see. If all you care about is being able to see chips and major imperfections you don't need to spend alot of money but if you want to see detail clearly then you will have to spend.

The microscope I use is a beautiful old swift 1190 my uncle used in medical school. I can get the magnification up stupid high if I change the optics, but there is very little to gain past 50x. Every edge looks like crap at 200.

I use a 30X and it tells me everything I need to know. Available on Ebay, just search for microscope 30X and look at the handheld models.

Our Local Radio Shack didn't have their microscope. I was looking at a model on line that incorporated a digital camera. That way I can get some feedback from you guys when I need to.
