    Question New guy!

    Hello everyone...

I'm new to this forum... I've been on B&B for a few months. This summer I hope to dice into Straight Razor Shaving... so I thought I'd introduce myself and start getting my research together. Any tips are welcome. Also... is there a place to learn how to straight razor shave? I live in Toronto Ontario, Canada and I wish to learn how to do it properly... the whole 9 yards... stropping, honing etc. I wish to learn the correct way to avoid frustration and ensure I keep my blade in good condition (once I get one)

Any tips or suggestion for starting out are welcome to be posted here for me or PMed to me.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post,

welcome,,you came to the right place. just about anything you need to learn will be in one post or another. My recomendation is to sit down and start reading. You'll find just about all of us here are willing to lend out advice freely and willingly to all your questions. It would be a BIG plus to get Lynn's dvd. You can order from here in the forums and the advice plus the visual it gives a newcomer is well worth the price you pay for it. Other then that, START SLOW and enoy...RAD is coming your way..

Welcome aboard! There is SO much information on this board that you will have plenty of reading material into the summer! Definitely read the stickies, check out the library on the home page, and I would DEFINITELY suggest getting Lynn's DVD (can be found in the B/S/T. It shows proper stopping, shaving, honing techniques, and more.

    See ya around!!

    ~Chris

EDIT: LOL mike, you beat me to it. I must type slow or something

the first mistake I made in straight shaving was buying a razor that was not "shave ready" pay the extra $20 (or so) to get your razor honed by a pro before you get it. The difference is really amazing.

I am not a expert, but start out slow, got to the b/s/t and you will be able to find good razors from members, who also can give you some good tips. Take your time,, it will come. ( Ihope for me to)

Try to get a "shave rady" razor. That save you time and lots of***@@@**** words...Did for me.....Did get my first razor, but not shave ready..so, had to get help by a honemeister.

Just wondering Mr. Todd- did the movie actually get you interested in straight shaving or were you into it before you knew about Sweeney? Obviously you could have known about it as a broadway show, etc. but your avatar is obviously from the Burton film... It's just something that a lot of guys have wondered- whether or not the movie will popularize straight shaving. Seems so far like it has.

One piece of advice Mr Todd. Dont strop the way that Johnny Depp does in the musical, and take more time over it than he does! Learn to do it properly, otherwise you will at best ruin your strop and at worst ruin your face!

Good question, Philadelphia. I've often wondered this myself. For me, Sweeney Todd did play a role in my switch from disposable to straight. I have been interested in them for a very long time, but the movie kind of pushed it over the edge for me.

When I was young my grandfather was a barber in the army... when he passed away I got his old barber kit. Mostly scisors and electric stuff... and weird bits I dunno what they are used for. This sparked shaving and grooming at a early age for me.

I was aware of Sweeney Todd before it became a movie and have seen it on Broadway a few times... I love the musical. I am very old fashioned and like the aspect of tradition and doing gentlemanly things, therefor the straight (I feel) was right down my ally... so I'm gunna give it a try this summer. I must admit, the movie helped me to propel my interest by starting it this summer, because originally I wanted to start in the summer of '09 but I can't wait any longer. I also say straight raor use in the movie Pan's Labyrinth, as well as one of the Matrix movies (those ghost guys use straights) So yeah... I think there really bad ass...

I have asked some other people and my friends... they think straight razor shaving is cool... but too old fashioned and time consuming... also I think there scared to try it and to tuff it out to learn a real skill... mind you all the people I asked were goo-users and M3 people. Or even electric shavers...

I also really like the lather making process (I currently use a DE) and the notion of using strops and honing and literally creating the blade you use is very attractive for me. Plus just another thing for me to collect

I hope htis answered some of your questions
