Default *FIRST SHAVE WITH NEW DOVO -- NOWHERE CLOSE!

Guys I'm feeling a little worried right now -- I just went one pass WTG with my new, pre-honed DOVO -- and the shave is AWFUL. Halfway through, I felt the blade started to dull because I still have a LOT of stubble. I use the same technique with my straight prior to this -- and the shave was terrific (it was a disposable too!)

    What should I do?

It takes time and practice to develop the skill and "feel" for shaving with a traditional straight. Make sure you are stropping carefully and keep practicing. You also might want to start with just the flat portions of your face - like under the sideburns and then expand as you get better.

If it was easy, everyone would do it. Enjoy the experience.

Pre-honed meaning factory honed or actually honed?

Disposables are almost nothing like shaving with a real straight. Assuming it is actually sharp enough you will have to be much more acurate with your angle as well as firmer in your hold. I would guess that you used far to steep of an angle thats why you have lots of stubble left.

You should send it for a real honing service, some of the guys here can do that service for a fearly good price.Dovo is a very well know brand so im thinking that what you need is send it for a "full" honing.

I got it honed by Lynn!

He sent it to me with a message saying it's Shave-Ready. I used an almost picture-perfect 30 degree angle, I practically started with the blade flat on my face then pulled it out to 30 on each shave to get the angle down.

I'm just a little shocked I guess. I just stropped it about 30 times, so maybe next shave will be better?? And also -- the sound should be high pitched when stropping correct?

I guess I was just expecting to get a solid shave with 2 passes, because that's what I got with my disposable straight (a really smooth shave, actually)

Sounds like you are lifting the razor off the spine while you strop. The only sound you should hear during stropping should be a (very) gentle rasp. Send Lynn a PM as he will likely be more than happy to fix any issues with the razor. It is not uncommon to get stropping wrong at first and to roll the edge.

Show a little discretion! PM Lynn with your problem first since he honed it! Give him a chance to work it out before you even breathe a word of your troubles so openly!

This sounds right. The sound is NEVER high pitched. that is scraping the edge off on the strop, it is a smooth sliding sound as you draw the edge down the strop. The spine should be in constant contact with the strop even in the flips at either end.

JMS: I just thought I'd actually ask you guys first, since Lynn's a very busy man, I'm sure, and thought maybe the community could help me trouble shoot and figure it out, before I bug Lynn!

And so there is no confusion, I had the poor results BEFORE I stropped the razor -- that was my first shave with a shave-ready DOVO, pre-honed. But thanks for the proper stropping tips!

What are you calling 30 degrees then? There should only be about one spine width between the spine and your cheek.
