Thread: Explain Rotaion please?

Hi,
This is all in preparation, as my first razor purchase still has to make it to my door and then get sent to Lynn for honing.

I've noticed several people mention using a rotation of different razors, and I haven't been able to find any mention of why. It makes sense to me to have an extra (or more!) around for when one needs to be honed, but that doesn't seem to be the underlying purpose, especially after seeing entire 7-day sets for sale.
Can anyone clue a newb in on this whole rotation concept?

Well technically nobody needs to to have a rotation of 15 - 20 or even 50 razors. 1 razor can do just fine, but many are bitten by the RAD bug (myself included) and we are compelled to purchase the as many razors as humanly possible.

Trust me you will know in a couple of months what it feels like to have RAD

I think rotation originated from the idea that the edge needed to rest before using again - an idea that I don't believe in to be honest. I think it was started by razor companies to boost sales
Now people use it to describe the razors they use most often because they have the luxury of choosing their favourites!

Part of the theory, people will tell you, is that if you touch up your edges regularly on a hone, then you can go longer between touch-ups and do all your razors at the same time in order to be more efficient. For example, with a 7-day set, if you like to touch up your edges every 4 shaves, then you can shave for a month before having to get the hone out. Then, once the hone is out, you touch up all 7 edges and you're set for another month.

While this may have been a valid reason at one time, now I think the rotation concept is just a way to rationalize RAD (which we all get).

Lol, trust me, I think I've already afflicted with RAD. In my first day researching straight razors I made the mistake of looking at Lynn's page of Maestro Livis. Well, I managed to convince myself to "settle" for a dubl duck Goldedge. ...and I'm already shopping for a second! I'm not really worried about whether or not I'll take to straight edges. It's classy and I've decided to do it, kinda like when I developed my taste for single malt scotch.

Good to hear. I was worried I wouldn't like it or would think it was too hard, but I don't think it's nearly as difficult or time-consuming as I had originally thought after reading up (for days) on here. I'm absolutely hooked.

I like to think of rotations as more of a monogamy backlash/Harem thing. There's some deep-seated, sub-conscious, primal male instinct bubbling to the surface here, I reckon.

Let's see there is the working razor rotation 14 razors 6 days per week
The Dubl Duck & Shumate display cabinet rotation 20 razors Sundays only
And the second drawer rotation 22 razors Hmmmm whenever I open that drawer like once per month...
Then there is the restoration drawer 4-10 razors that are in process of going into my ROTATION

RAD who me????????
