Thread: The first shave: results and thoughts

Well, last night after work I managed to find some free time and decided to get my shave on. Did the shower, did a lather/hot towel and a re-lather and got to work. Overall, it was a decent shave...I just took my time and did what I could. Only real bloodletting involved me accidentally cutting my cheek with the end of the blade when I was focusing on another area. I ended up having to use the mach3 for some touch up around the jaw line and chin, but that's about it.

Other things:

- I def experienced some razor burn/dryness...(angle? multiple re-lathers?)
- I never switched hands (I'm a righty), will probably try more left hand stuff on the 2nd attempt.
- Any advice for the area around the jaw line?
- Is there a limit to how long your facial hair should be? I had a good two days of growth going on, so it was a little hard to get the blade "started" on its stroke in some spots.

I guess that's all I can think of now before the coffee kicks in...all and all it was a fun time, and I know I'll get better as I keep doing it...

With the jawline thing, try stretching your skin up, essentially pulling your jawlin up to the side of your face. For the stuff that's too low for that, pull down and shave it as if it were your neck. That worked for me.

The razor burn could be pressure or angle. The lather should help reduce razor burn, honestly.

Sounds like my first shave . Believe it or not , you're off to a good start ! The jawline and chin are tricky , but it will get better with practice . Be patient , and pay close attention to what you're doing with the blade . Almost 11 months for me , and the shaves are GREAT ! I will not shave with anything but a straight razor .

Well it's a good thing I won't have to be shaving my chin! Good to hear you've had a decent first shave.

Sounds like you had a good experience. Go at it slow. It does take a couple days for the skin to adjust. You will start feeling more comfortable the more you use the straight razor.

Welcome Dave. It's great to have the first shave in. Keep going and make sure you prep well. I think it is very important to use both hands. It will take a few shaves to get both hands accustomed to handling the razor. Good luck with your new adventure.
