Default First Shave: Toilet Paper bits ensued

OK, so I've been using a "shavette" like razor to clean up my neck for as long as I can remember and decided I wanted to try it on my face. I knew that I was in for a treat (and by treat I mean trick), but I like to learn some things the hard way. I figured by using a new disposable blade I could at east take a few factors out of the equation. I knew better, but I couldn't wait to try it. I set my expectations low and told myself that a few cuts won't kill me. Mistakes that I knowingly made and have learned from include but are not limited to:

    Using Gillete shave gel
Not prepping my beard with heat
Trying to do too much my first time (I went with, across and against the grain)
    Not stretching my skin enough
Coming in at too steep of an angle - I think this was my biggest issue
Not stopping after I knew things had gotten out of hand
and most importantly - Not having watched the DVD

Needless to say the bad news is that I cut myself to ribbons, gave myself crazy razor burn that has lasted over 24 hours, and had whiskers of different sizes all over my face (had to resort the the M3). The good news is that I am not discouraged. If anything I'm more excited about diving in. My impatience was punished, but I was having fun regardless of the little (and not so little) cuts on my face. Call me an optimist, but I'm sold on straight razor shaving. I knew better, so I can only blame my lack of experience. I am going to buy the DVD today and give it another whirl asap. I am also planning on getting the proper tools for the job. The funniest part was when the Woman came in and asked me what the I was doing. My face was a little bloody but I just kept on going. I'm a finish what you start kind of guy.

    OUCH!!!

Take your time. Shaving with a Str8 is something that you learn slowly. After you have been doing it a bit you will be able to shave faster and faster, but you should NEVER rush it. I hate to always equate it to sex, but It works: If you take your time, go slow and enjoy all of it, it ends better. LOL

    Congrats for trying!
