    Default Touch up Hone

Looking for some advice and or guidance. New into straight razor shaving only have one razor currently and everyone I find that does honing is on the other side of the country from NY... so that would mean I would be with out a razor for 2 weeks with shipping. So any advice on a stone to just do minor touch up? Not looking to do a full home just to get the edge up

You should be OK to do touch ups with a barber hone (usually not that much on eBay) or chromium oxide on a paddle or linen strop.

    two things

PM Bayamonte aka Nelson he is in NY and knows how to hone
2 weeks is BS, Priority mails takes 2 days from NY to Idaho Nelson just sent me some AWESOME coffee so you should be out of a razor 1 week max I send tons of razors all over the country

Naniwa SS 12k is hard to beat at any price is very versatile and easy to find so is always my goto recomendation for a touch up hone

I have a strop with green chrom ox but it is still lacking. So that’s why I thought about a stone that I could just do a couple passes on to bring some zip back to the edge.

It isn't quite that easy but YES you are on the right track, if more people would learn to hone that way from the top down they would find the journey way easier

I have several customers that only send their razors out for a first honing and if they damage them, they go years between full honings

Send it to Glen. He will get it back to ya quickly if he says he can. At most 3 days for shipping each way but two most times. You now know why its important to have a second razor. Just keep in mind that putting a razor to stone even for a touch-up can make it worse if you dont know what your doing. Then your sending it out and buying a stone.

So if you get a stone be sure to ask about inking the edge, tape, angle, pressure, lapping the stone, etc... before putting a razor to it.

Also I guess technically I do have two razors the very first one I bought is a gold dollar honed up by some one pretty reputable but it is so heavy and big I have only used it once and said I would never touch it again until I could get some new scales for it. The other one I actually purchased on here a Henckels and have had it for a week or two and I can tell it is not like it was the first shave. I have done the chrom ox on the strop but hasn’t noticed a huge difference some but not what I want

Glen is GSSIXGUN. He replied above. And his 12k recommendation is solid. A half dozen passes on the 12k and you'd be back in business.

Naniwa 12k SuperStone is probably what you need. It will fix a lot of small issues, but isn't gritty enough to do a lot of damage.
