    Default A beginner again...

After 7 months away, I'm starting over, it seems.

I'm now almost exclusively a DE shaver, but throw a SR shave in when I'm feeling brave.

For you real beginners, jump in and stay in! It's amazing what you can learn here and oh my, the people you'll meet.

Glad to be back...2018 has been a long one so far, but I'm excited about shaving again!

Thanks, it’s good to be back. I have a son, his wife and grandson in Raleigh now. I’ll let you know when we’re heading west!

I took a long break from straight shaving because life happened. Once I got back into I was glad I did.

    Welcome back.

If you only throw in a straight razor shave every now and then, you will never get good at it. However, you do not have to go for a three pass SR shave from the start. I suggest that start with one pass with the grain and then finish your shave with your DE. Keep doing this until you are comfortable with the WTG pass. Then try to shave a second pass either across the grain or against the grain, once again completing your shave with a DE. Pretty soon you will have mastered two directions and then can go for the three pass shave.

If you can, try to learn how to shave with both hands. Some people will shave entirely with their dominant hand, but if you have some coordination in your non-dominant hand, try to use it as well. Some parts of your face are easier to shave if you can use your non-dominant hand.

I normally shave WTG using the hand corresponding to that side of my face (right side of face with my right hand and vice versa). When shaving XTG or ATG, I reverse my grip on the razor and shave each side of my face with the opposite hand. I find it to be easier that way. Just be aware that holding a sharp blade against your neck with your non-dominant hand can be rather intimidating the first time you try it, so avoid any distractions and remain calm. This is not the time for your spouse, kids, or pets to come barging in.

My chin is difficult to shave and requires the steady hand of a surgeon, so I do that with my dominant hand only.
