Thread: Got my first cuts out of the way!

"You must not be shaving your chin/mustache area I presume? If so, you are taking to the straight razor freakishly fast. If not, try shaving those areas and see how you fare. The "fool's pass" and chin really up the challenge of straight razor shaving. If I wasn't shaving those areas of my face, I would probably be more than little bored by now."


The cuts were on the corners of the chin, close to the jawline, and I didn't get cut on the first pass when the lather was on it. It was as I tried to clean up bits and pieces missed on the first try. The cuts were almost identical in size, placement, and angle on each corner of the chin. I think I almost cut myself in the same place the 1st shave.

I was surprised I got that far as well, which is why I got cocky, maybe.

I think it's partly because I don't have a real heavy beard why I'm getting a little farther. I have been extremely careful since the beginning about trying to have a very small angle, and no pressure as well.

That reminds me of my attitude. Some say aren't you afraid of getting cut chafing with those. No I am not afraid of getting cut. It happens. Then people say that's terrible you should shave with a multi blade so you won't get cut. Truth is I have gotten my worst cut with a multi blade. My response is usually have you ever cut yourself with a kitchen knife? We all know the answer. Well did you through out all your kitchen knives and go to a slap chop. We know the answer to that too. It is a wee bit more dangerous but well worth it when you have that close, clean and comfortable shave, day after day.

I knew something happened because the blade kind of stopped in a way I didn't like, but it took a minute to feel it. Meanwhile even now, and a minute after, I felt it.. and didn't love it. It really electrified me when I splashed some water on it as well Those things seem like a scapel to me, as far as sharpness.

At the end of the day though, I've cut myself worse on cartridges (not as long typically but a worse bite) and as thin as the cuts are with the straight, it seems like it will heal quickly? Idk. The cuts seemed much finer, and the scabbing very thin. I've even had a few cuts from what was at the time sold as a high quality electric razor.

Happens to all of us. It will get better of course. Make sure you have lots of time so you will never feel rushed. Lock the bathroom door. Reason: It seems that when I'm shaving, that's the time my wife decides she needs to ask me something.

Over time, if you are anything like me, you learn to stop abruptly once you feel the pain of a cut, so they rarely go all that deep. After a few days, they heal up fine with no scarring.

I agree that multi-blades are far worse with cutting, not to mention the frequent in-grown hairs and overall skin irritation. No thanks! I don't even own a single DE. It's too scary to use a fancy scraper for shaving.

This is my biggest problem. It's all on me, but I'm not giving myself enough time. I'm used to shaving right before work, and would knock it out in about 2 1/2 minutes all included.

I didn't enjoy shaving with cartridges, and just went as fast as possible. I really do enjoy trying to use the straight though, and think I will love it when I get some good muscle memory in the hands. Using the brush, everything. So cool.

But I need to rearrange my morning for sure. I made myself rushed today, but I still wanted to do it, so I did.

I feel like that definitely contributed to getting cut.

Today I shaved with excellent Japanese razor and at the very last second I was badly cut. Just decided to spend one more time on the cheek, without lather.
Sometimes I want to stop shaving with straight razors, because I'm afraid that eventually the entire face will be in scars. I ask myself, why do I need this ??

Well cuts and weepers will happen.
But glad to hear you did so well

It does take some time, so yeah you'll have to rearrange your morning. But many of us consider it spoiling ourselves. It is like meditation to me. Even though I have an 8 month old in the bathroom with me every morning. And a 3 year old coming in and out. But I've learned to "ignore" the minor distractions. They enjoy watching me shave.

But if you can, make this your time. Things get better and better with each shave

TC and others have given you sound counsel! You seem to understand that they are trying to help you and you also seem to admit a few of the faults of your first shave ( rushing, trying to shave all areas) all of which I find very commendable! :

Now--Just implement those little bits of corrective criticism and acknowledge your mistakes and start Fresh!!! Just the Sideburns To Jawline for a couple of week (at least) so that you will get comfortable with the art. Then move down to under the jawline for a few weeks after shaving the sideburns to jawline and last and I mean dead last work on the moustach and chin.

Go Slow, Learn as you go and you'll soon be bragging on how much you not only enjoy using a straight razor, but what great shaves you get!
