new to SRs
Hey guys this is my first post here my question is what's a good brand of straight razor?
Mainly interested in quality (not necessarily luxury).

Are you looking for newly manufactured or vintage? If you are looki g for a newly manufactured razor my recomendation would Ralf Aust. Revisor, Dovo and Thiers-Issard are some others to consider. When it comes to vintage razors there are a ton of reallly good brands to choose from. Look for brands coming out of Sheffield, Solingen, or the American Northeast like NY, MA, or PA.Hirlau likes this.

As the others have said, start in the library.
And check out the classifieds here for a good used blade. There is usually a low priced one in there and it's pretty much guaranteed to be good razor.Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead - Charles Bukowski

Welcome and enjoy the journey. Ditto on what all the other fellows said about the classifieds here. You can get a good vintage razor for half the price of a new one.

The razor is half the equation, the other half is knowing how to use it and how to keep it in good working order. The first half of the equation is easy, buy a "Shave Ready Blade". The second half of the equation is knowledge and you've come to the right place, that's a good start.

I know nothing about straight razors. However, I do know more than a little about knives, although I never carry one except while hunting. If steel comes from Solingen, Germany, give it a long look. Many knife aficionados have opined that the best steel in the world comes from Solingen, Germany. I own a few Solingen Boker knives. They are second to none.
