Default Questions on razor for beginner

I have a question as to if my razor is a good one to start with or if I should get an entirely new one all together.

Well, it would help if you tell us what razor it is and put up photos.

Without a photo or more info manufacturer, blade size and shape we just can't answer.

Well, where or who you got it from should answer that question. If you got it from and experienced wet shaver that is proficient at honing then you are most likely good to go. On the other hand if you got it from someone that is not known to you to be an experienced person then it get questionable. Amazon, Ali Express, and Ebay are not always good sources for beginner blades. There are quite a few places you can get shave ready blades from. Knowing where you are from would give me a hint as to whom I might recommend.

I got the razor at my local "barbershop and shaving parlor" in town. That's the actual name of the barbershop. Don't know the brand or anything like that. I will go ask for more information so you can help me further

I have seen similar razors at Tommy Guns barber shop, where they do straight razor shaves with a shavette, however the ones I saw were definitely razor shaped objects from areas known to make not razors. I can;t say for certain, but the lack of a defined makers mark leads me to believe that you paid very little for this razor. A true damascus or pattern welded razor is quite expensive most times. You will likely be much further ahead buying a blade from the classifieds here, from one of many vendors. I am a little more familiar with the Canadian vendors. Straight Razor Designs owns this forum and has a good reputation in the US. You should consider that you will also need a brush and soap and a strop. All of those can be found there, and watch the classifieds as they tend to change regularly. Shave ready is the important part that you are looking for right now, and to begin with avoid anything spike pointed.

Ya might want to pass, a good starter razor can be had in the classifieds and it will shave, not knowing what it is and it's probably cheap, ( most new guys fall into that trap) pattern welded steel isn't cheap to come up with a blade that will hold an edge and shave right. I believe there are some inexpensive razors in the classifieds right now. Tc

Rod Bell has a beautiful Boker razor in the Classifieds right now for $65. This is a great value for an excellent razor.
