Thread: Loss for words at cracked scales

Hi. I have been lurking here for a bit and just decided to make an account today. I was going to make my first post about my first straight razor shave. Unfortunately it has to be about me buying my first 6/8 straight razor and the scales cracking. I very hesitantly bought a 6/8 dovo full hollow best quality from Superior Shave and got it in the mail today. I sat on it for a while but eventually pulled the trigger because it was the only 6/8 full hollow carbon steel classic straight razor I could find. I figured I just needed to baby it. I took it out and opened it up and compared it to a Dovo Forestal I never fully used because it's too dull and is a hassle to get it honed. When I closed my straight razor I noticed it has a crack on the pivot. I am so confused and utterly speechless. What it he world happened. Did I mishandle it? I was just opening and closing the scales carefully. I didn't even have a chance to take it to my bathroom and strop it. I was paranoid about the scales breaking so that is why I almost didnt buy it but this is something that has me at a loss. I'm just staring at my new straight razor wondering how I spent that much money on something that broke so easily. I'm not even sure what to do.

I think the best thing to do is to contact the vendor and tell them your story - include photos as well as it sounds like you've bought a defective item.

Yeah contact the owner sometimes these little things happen just slipped through the QC net it's not your fault no worries just phone and I'm sure this will be quickly resolved.

I'm sure that in time you will have this little set back resolved. In the mean time I am sure you are distressed. I'm sorry your shave has been spoiled. You can get past this. All you need is a little time and patience.

Bummer; that's really disappointing. It might have gotten damaged during shipping. As the other guys said, contact Superior Shave; they'll no doubt make it right.

You did not get a chance to do it, but the most common way that beginners break scales at the pivot is by holding the razors by the scales when they strop.

This is why you should always buy from Straight Razor designs. Would have come shave ready. Send your dull razor out for a honing by a member of this forum. Worse case scenario you can have the scales replaced on the Dovo. That one will most likely need to be honed as well. Just another delay don't let it bring you down. Good luck and welcome.

There are several possibilities as to what happened however going by your post there would just seem to either be a defect and the scales probably had a crack to begin with and opening them caused it to spread or maybe they were pinned improperly. Either way send them back for a replacement.

I'm sure the vendor will honor his product. It would be very bad business if they didn't. as far as the other razor ck the classifieds here. there are many good men with a hone that can help. Don't give up. It will get better.
