Thread: Tennessee Places that hone and maybe clean up

I've been using the Weck Shavette thing. I am going to send my Gold Dollar back to work out the nicks I put in it. Thing is I have those two Merkurs that will need a good sharpening and while they seem to be in good shape they do have a few rust spots that will need to be dealt with if possible/necessary.

Does anyone know of a good place I can take them in and/or around Middle Tennessee to get them basically shave ready? One of them is almost sharp the other is very dull.

The less expensive the better, I still have to pay for the razors. It might have to wait until February to send these out but if anyone knows of some places that would be a good start.

Without pics or having the razors in hand its fairly hard to diagnose exactly what the razors need. Can you post a couple of pics?

What part of TN are you located?

The top picture shows the worst of it.

If I were you I would try some MAAS metal polish and elbow grease on a micro fiber cloth. The rust in the pix doesn't appear too deep. If that doesn't do it you might try some 0000 steel wool and a light spray of WD 40 with small circles and light pressure. Be mindful of the edge even a dull one can cut you badly if you don't pay attention. After that send it to a pro for your first honing so you know what a shave ready edge feels like. good luck

I'm with Highwayman on using metal polish (Mother's, Flitz, Maas, etc.) and elbow grease, I can't see any reason for sanding. As long as you are getting black stuff on your polishing cloth the polish is working. So, when you think you have it where you want it, check your cloth and if it is still getting black stuff, keep scrubbing. I have had a few razor that I thought were going to need sanding and with a little extra effort got them looking just fine.

I don't see much hone wear on the spine, the bevels look narrow and even, which is a very good sign. They should hone up and be great shavers but as Highwayman said, send them out to a pro for honing.

Do you know any places that hone around here or at least in this area?
