Thread: Second Shave Success!

Hi Again

So I decided to give my restored Clauss razor a second go.
This time I put it back on the 1000 and worked a bit harder to set the bevel.
Paid some good attention to it under the scope as well.
Progressed onto the 3k then 6 and finally the 8.
I've decided that the 8 k stone is a cheap piece of crap as I can almost feel the Grit and don't believe this is right( please correct) and after a few laps it seemed to be getting worse on the tp tests.
So back on the 6 for some love.
I also bought a cheap shavette to compare Blade sharpness.
After watching a number of video's on stropping I slowly did some practice runs with the shavette then gave the razor the works.
Having read that preparation is key I did the hot towel, shave oil and lather.
Shave went surprisingly well, I worked on my angle and tried to map the hair patterns.
End result is not a super close shave after 1 pass, but didn't get stuck like before with the tugging.
Also only 1 minor nick just near the lip and I think this was a small scab from previous run.

Quite happy with the result the Clauss I picked up from the antique store for 25bucks and restored ( still needs some buffing, but all minor pitting is out)
I've got a Bengal I'm working on next and have my eye on another at the antique store, but this one is 65 and a bit steep.

Way to go! , but heres a great piece of advise , at this stage you don't even know what a well honed razor will do for ya, send a that puppy off to Oz or someone else in your area , a pro who shaves with them not a knife guy,, there are a few guys down your way if you will do a member search that will give you an edge to go by and to really get a great shave. Good job and I have to pretty much agree with TC. Get it professionally honed, so that you can have a bench mark for what a truly shave ready razor is. I've shaved off a 5000 just to see what it felt like and got a decent shave but it was not that comfortable and not something I'd want to do daily.

Just for the record, I did not follow TC's and others advice and started honing soon after I started with a straight. I used a "practice" razor for quite a long time before I did anything with my good razors. Not sure if that's good or bad but I was learning technique and for sure at that point I did not truly know what a real shave ready razor was.

As a matter of fact, I just got a new 7/8 Aust from SRD and after shaving with that, I realized a couple of mine needed just a little more refresh work.

Get a quality 8000 and 12000 to add to your progression when you can. I very much like my Naniwa Super Stones and just what to get is open to many different opinions, also.

Get it honed by a pro and keep up the good work, you'll be making your own great edges after some practice work has been put in.

Going to reach out to Oz soon, got a bit bogged down with long hours at work this Week
I wish I lived in the states, we have 0 razor shops here( apart from those toothbrush razor stores :P) and the AUS online shops stock very limited equipment and pricing is inflated
Do you recon I could go for a 12k or should I aim for 10k and over?
The scope shows very minor burring, compared to disposable blades, hopefully a better stone will get this sorted.
What sort of tests do you use( apart from shaving) to determine blade sharpness?
