Welcome Magnethead! I like your positive attitude. Keep at it, check out the useful wiki here and if possible, find someone in Ireland who can show you a few things. Most importantly, to check out your razor and your stropping technique.

Thanks, I saw a youtube vid today that explained just how close the spine should be to the face (2 widths of the spine), and even though the book mentioned use a low angle I didn't quite get it. I'd say I was using around a 50-60 degree angle and just pulling/scraping off the hairs, It felt massively uncomfortable as you can imagine... and it was funny, the way the upper lip exposed about 100 micro weepers after I did the first pass, must have been pulling it down at about 90 degrees

Going to modify that angle now, and start shaving for a change.

I scrunched up my chin for some unknown reason, I guess to get it nice and puffy instead of straight and smooth, that's why it ended up in the sink

Welcome to the forum. Good to see you are not letting a good blood letting ruin your enjoyment. Lord lifting, you have to get that angle and pressure cased and weight off tout suit. Yes, 1 to 2 spine widths gap and very little to no pressure. Hope your next shave goes just a bit better.

Welcome to the forum magnethead. Be patient, take your time and concentrate hard on what the razor is doing. It should glide across the skin, very light pressure, just scrape off your soap/cream. It'll get better! Good luck.

Those 50-60 degree angles can get sort of messy!! Try the razor nearly flat on your face and slowly increase the angle, you will find the best angle that way

Welcome to Straight Razor Place, magnethead. You might consider buying a styptic pencil.

There is a really famous barbershop in Dublin named The Waldorf Barbershop. Have you ever been to it?

LOL, I know nothing about shaving, just looked it up The Waldorf Barbershop
I don't think I'll be visiting it since I just got all the gear or maybe if the appriciation grows to the level that I want to question the absolute experts

I'm all about HomeBrewing in my spare time over the last 20 years, but since my Keezer broke down 10 months ago, I've opened up to other hobbies.....Might end up being 90 and still slicing the hair off with a stright

Thanks. I got a good laugh out of that. Wouldn't have been nearly as funny without the picture.

If that is how you were holding the razor, I think I know how the cuts happened.

I've given myself some wicked razor burn from too much pressure or too many passes, but thankfully I haven't cut myself that bad! I've gotten a couple of small nicks (or scratches), but nothing serious.

Welcome to the forum. Even though your a natural, I'm sure you'll find some useful information and advice here.
