After Five Years, I got back on the Horse.

Hello, everyone. I was super interested in straight razor shaving, and joined this forum five years ago. My first shave was OK - I just did the one side, like Lynn says. But after a time or two, I got a bit overconfident, and thought I could just go fast, like I was using a Gillette razor. Well, I cut the hell out of my sideburn area - and I was afraid to get "back on the horse" again. Here I am five years later, and I really stropped my my shaver - and did a test run over one sideburn. THIS time - I really watched Lynn's super helpful youtube videos, and I heeded his advice. Especially the angle of the razor. Today, I had a one week old growth on my face, and thought I would do just a bit with the straight razor, then finish with my modern razor. I was doing such a good, slow and methodical shave, that I went ahead and shaved my entire face! I am so happy! It will take quite awhile before I can get the bbs effect, but I had just tiny and superficial nicks - no worse then using a modern razor. I wanted to thank Lynn, and everyone else in here that gave me the confidence to do this. This is a green and sustainable way to shave. and it's the best. Thank you all!

Reminders from a video are always helpful. I watched one a few weeks ago that emphasized the blade angle and I got the results I wanted again.

As someone who himself had drifted away due to medical reasons some time ago... (more than 5 years I think), I recently climbed back into the saddle and it's like starting all over again.

I keep my DE in the shave area, but I have not touched it since picking up the straight again. Not because my shaves are stellar..... they are NOT, but they are "acceptable" appearance wise, and that's all that matters... I may notice it feels rough, the rolling pin dept. might complain, but that's how I justify buying more gear! Hey, she's not happy so.... I gotta buy X and give it a try! <grin> Oh, and I hone like a noob as well... All those nice hones I have are worthless until I develop the feel, once more.

Welcome back, and rest assured , you are not alone. Just take it slow and easy this time, and if all else fails, Chicks dig scars, only not when yer north of 60! <groan>

Welcome Back mate.
Just take you time & you will be surprised how good the shaves become.
Just don't be in a rush until you get the hang of it.

Thanks everyone. Tonight is the first time I have shaved since I last posted. I had a LONG eight days worth of beard to shave, but ever soooo slowly I did it again, with just a few nicks. And all of that long hair came right off, with very little effort.
I am working on technique rather then a super close shave. I finish up and small straggling whiskers with my gillette.
