    I'd also add the for those without the patience (or ability/technology) to watch youtube videos on demand, Lynn's DVD is a big asset for any new SR shaver. You have it in your "library, ready to pull out and watch the specific area you're curious about or struggling with. In the beginning, it helped me many times. Maybe I'll watch it this afternoon.

    I agree with Pithor, because I have made every mistake on the list. But on the other hand, a good hone and a good razor will last a lifetime, and can easily be resold. So find out what 'good' is as soon as possible, and then buy as much as you like.

    Speaking from personal experience, I'd say, get a (one) razor, learn to shave with it, read up on alternatives in the meantime (keeping in mind the caveats outlined in the original post), then - and only then - take it from there.

    Differences between razors are vastly overstated in my opinion. I have a few, and don't really care which one I pick.
