When you say that you'll add water but then it's like soapy water: that's not always bad. If it's soapy water w/ big bubbles, get your brush in an WORK that stuff, pumping & swirling. You may find that it starts to thicken into a whipped cream with tiny bubbles. It depends on the soap or cream, but lots of them will behave that way.

If you have time, practice on a non-shaving day. Takes the pressure off.
Usually when it becomes soapy water I panic and just quickly apply it to my face and try to shave as quickly as possible. I won't do that next time. Also, great idea on trying this on a non-shaving day. I don't know why I didn't think of that before. Thanks for your help.

I began by loading on the puck and face lathering. I couldn't get satisfactory results. I watched a video by Mantic on lathering, and IIRC that was when I went to the bowl. I lathered in a bowl for a few years but later went back to face lathering. Now I mostly face lather, but use a bowl occasionally. I found it easier to learn to lather successfully with the bowl. Hope you will too.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
