    Default Angle "Jacked Up"

Greetings, I am trying to learn the language of straight shaving. What does it mean when I hear/read that the angle is "jacked up"? For illustration, if 30 degrees is standard, is 20 degrees jacked up or is 40 degrees jacked up. Thanks.

don’t understand the question, it would depend on the context.

The example does not make sense, perhaps if you posted the original post?

I would take Jacked Up, to mean in need of repair.

I think he is asking about the Razor Geometry

Basically the average angle of a SR edge is 16° if the razor has been abused like so many of the older Sheffields have been then the spine gets worn down un-equally to the edge and the angle drops enough that the Bevel first gets much larger then eventually the edge will fail because the steel cannot handle the lower angle...

As long as the edge and spine stay in sync then there is no issue, the angle can also go up or down from the factory set, how much depends on the steel...

If you are asking for an exact number of degrees that the angle can change before the edge fails the answer is the ambiguous YMMV

Go to youtube and search for the Lynn Abrams Introduction to Straight Razor Shaving. This will help you get the razors edge and spine on the proper shaving angle.

I was wondering the same thing. Never heard the expression "jacked up" relating razor angles before.

    That's what I thought!
Anything that's "jacked up" was bad. Like, "Dude, you drank all beer and didn't share? That's jacked up."

I can only assume he is maybe referring to the blade angle to his face when shaving???? Being a newbie to straight razoring as well, I am not sure. I would bet he is referring to a angle not 2 spine widths off the face but more like what I was referring to in a post of like 60 degrees or better which is going to result in my getting the razor re-set as far as bevel and sharpened again.

Sorry my original post was confusing. I do now understand the term "jacked up" was another way of saying "wrong" or "incorrect". Michael70 is correct, the reference was to the angle of the blade to the face. In context, the comment was posted to a shave video, "your angle is jacked up". I see the comment was just a criticism and not a suggested improvement.
