Thread: First shave

OK shaving guru's. I have just had my first true straight razor shave. I have been using a shavette for the past three months and have become rather good (very little to no blood loss). But, I have a question. When switching to a proper SR for the first time, has anyone else found this to be awkward and a little cumbersome? My SR just feels so heavy compared to the shavette. Is this normal and do I just need to man-up a bit?

Yes, there is a disconnect between shavette and a straight. The weight and especially the angle of blade to face changes somewhat. As you put it 'man up' and solve the little adjustments needed for good straight razor shaves.

The shaving angle needs to be lower and yes, the blade is heavier. Don't worry, you will adapt to it.
If you continue having trouble with it, then start working out!

I think that in short order you will find that the weight is helpful in "plowing" through your beard. You should find that shaving is much smoother shortly.

I have a few razors. ... They come in various weights with some very light and some heavy. It is just a matter of adjustment for the razor you are using. Wont take long and you won't even notice

Congrats on the first SR shave! I had mine yesterday after about 8 months of DE. No blood loss adds to the excitement factor. I can't comment about shavettes, but I will offer best wishes as you move forward with SR.
