    Default Strop From Amazon

I need to by a strop. My wife said from Amazon because that is where she has her credit card for Christmas. Anyway I see a Illinois razor strop that says russian leather. I am wondering if there are any others that I should look at or that you would recommend.

Illinois strops are decent strops the 2.5 ones are the most used for straights. I used one till I made my horsehide strop and I just bought an old#2 heirloom 3inch from tony miller. never owned a tm before this will be my first out of about 15 strops I own. I think mine was the cowhide strop I would have to go look to be sure. watch out for the 2 inchers they are plentiful as most don't like them.

There's some decent dovo strops on amazon too. I'm not picky about strops though.

Comparing Dovo strops with Herold strops in a brick and mortar store, I became convinced that Dovo strops are nothing more than re-branded Herold strops.

Feel, look, dimensions, materials and workmanship were all the same; the only difference the embossed name on the leather.

This is not surprising since Herold in Germany makes the bulk of German strops.

Unless the "Dovo" name on the strop has added value for you, you may be able to save yourself money by buying a "Herold" strop instead.

Amazon offers Herold loom and hanging strops and on closer inspection you may come to the same conclusion as me.

Keep in mind though that in Europe 3" strops are unusual and most strops will between 2" and 2 ½" in width.

I am only finding 1 1/2 inch wide ones for Harolds. This is one of the ones i am looking at: http://www.amazon.com/Illinois-Razor...ds=Razor+Strop

    Another one: http://www.amazon.com/Professional-Q...22+Razor+Strop

I even seen a SRD strop but it was only 2" so that was a no. I am looking at least 2.5" wide.

The 2" SRD strop is still super nice. I wouldn't discount it just because it's not 2.5" wide. You're going to have to use an x stroke on both a 2 and a 2.5 anyway. Width is really only an issue if you don't want to use an x stroke in which case you would just get one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Leather-sharpe...SIN=B0068S0U5I but yeah it's out of stock.

    Hi keller24,

If you were looking at the Illinois 827, it's a good one. My dad used one for decades; he later gave it to me and I used it for a another 20 years (until it fell apart due to my not caring for it as well as I could have). It's a barber-quality strop. I'm now using an Illinois 361; it's very similar except it's a regular tanned cowhide/ cotton canvas combination without the handles on the ends. It has also worked very well for me for about seven years now. (I'm taking much better care of this one.)

Either one of those would serve you well.

    Enjoy!

As stated above, SRD has some strops on Amazon. Great quality product.
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

I was looking at that and trying to make up my mind. I now have $25 e-gift cert to use so I am able, with the wardens...err...wife's permission, to look at more of a quality strop as well as a few other items I have been chomping at the bit for.
