Hi there. The shaving foam stuff in a can with compressed air is no good at all for shaving with a straight. Really there's two aspects to a lather, glide and cushion. Glide allows the razor to travel across the face smoothly, cushion (which is a products of bubbles) allows the razor to move on a bed so to speak. The shaving foam does have bubbles of course, but the foam has a LOT of air in it, too much air and not enough 'body'. A good lather will have some body; not too much as otherwise it gets too gluggy. I'd highly recommend either Body Shop Macca Root cream, or Taylor of Old Bond street cream or Tabac cream. Those three are really easy to make a lather with. I wouldn't start with a soap, as soaps can be a little harder to produce a good lather.

I always used to use Proraso pre/post cream it helped with the glide, too.

metulburr, my brother on the shaving path...No one here is trying to discourage you or hurt your feelings, they are trying to encourage you and even help by giving you advice and material things to help...free.

It seems, however, that your responses are sometimes "from the hip" and don't convey a sense that you're really concerned about learning. You may ask, why does Harold say that?

Here is why: I believe that learning is an active, not a passive endeavor. The student must expend at least as much effort as the teachers in the process. That active role on your part doesn't seem to come through in your posts. Some examples are: complaining about the organization of the site; not following provided links that take you right to the answers you seem to be seeking; using "canned foam with compressed air", suggesting to me that you've not read the beginner's section of SRP or you would have known it wasn't workable; saying words to the effect, 'did you send me broken razors'; not using the search function of the site in spite of numerous attempts to coach you to do that; threatening to just Google or use Yahoo answers (where you'll no doubt get 'answers' but not necessarily help; etc, etc.

No doubt some of the wonderful members of this forum and updaters of the info on the site will continue try to help you, but please do your part...explore, read, absorb, recognize help when it presents itself and be a good student....expending as much effort as you are asking of others.

That's my advice....take it or leave it, but please don't argue with it.

Fully agree with Harold.


I am more than happy to help a member with a genuine question, but I also do believe that new members have an obligation to educate themselves (Google, go through previous threads on the subject), as we are not here to teach people to suck eggs.


In a nutshell: I did not join SRD to replace the Google search function.

Plus one to Harold. General feeling I got was more push back than embracing the knowledge.
A line by line rebuttal to members does NOT ingratiate you to the community.
We are as a group middle aged men who have been there done that and dont need no push back when WE put ourselves out there.
WE the global community have learned to interact in a manner that shares information discusses and comes to a consensus on all matters. Sometimes we agree to disagree but always in a gracious manner.
Whining ,fault finding,finger pointing never fixed anything,it is highly frowned upon , At this point in our lives its simpler to walk away and avoid drama.

If the post office blows this box up ... I am at my wits end.
Good try with fixing and innovative way to reuse what you had. Very good actually. So much so that I was able to use larger washers, I doubled them for extra strength. We the community also put inner washers between the scales.

You are correct. I will try in the future to research the site better. And try to tone down the excuses.

I have the spent the majority of the past few days researching proper stropping, researching more how to shave...There is quite a large amount of data on this site about shaving.

Thanks. I did not have such a small wrench to fit that small bolt and nut so i wasnt able to fully "rig" it to work proper. I didnt have such small washers, so i swiped the inner ones to use for the outer ones.
