Thread: Just Ordered!

Well, I just put an order in for a Dovo replaceable blade straight razor. I'm trying to ease my wife into this.I told here it was going to save money.....the joke's on her!!! This is, with any luck, just a temporary razor. Once I get the hang of using it, I would like to step up to a nice kind of middle of the road straight razor. I know everyones face is different, but if you have a suggestion as to a brand to look at, or one not to, I would be glad to hear from you. Thanks in advanced.

This is exactly how I started. I even told my wife the same thing and got a Dovo Shavette. It is a smart way to start as you just have to focus on learning how to shave and not blade maintenance or stropping. Of course it is different from a real straight but the technique is the same. I suggest trying to use the long disposable blades for the shavette and not the DE blades that are shorter. This will give more shaving length and resembles a straight razor more. When your ready for a straight you can stick with dovo if you want. I did this and it worked well. Or Ralph Aust, Wacker, TI, and there is always the classifieds here on SRP. Pretty much anything from a reputable dealer that suits your fancy.

I am new to this as well and have only used one brand but my first razor was a Boker. I liked it so much a bought another and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

Best advise is invest some time reading through the site and then start making the decisions. There is a lot of wisdom here it takes a bit to absorb all the basics though

My first straight was a king cutter, I've loved it.

Well, today is the day. My razor should be at the door steps when I get home. I will post an update tonight after I get to try it out and let everyone know how it went. Thanks again for all the tips!

Good luck! I skipped the shavette and went from DE to Straight. Picked up a Ralf Aust set from SRD and three shaves in I've loved it so far. The Ralf Aust came recommended from SRD, and everyone here supported it, so it was an easy decision to pull the trigger on it.

As for cost savings. . . still waiting on those to kick in . . . But honestly, I spent $50 at Costco for 24 cartridges. After going through those, what do I have? A beard that still needs shaving.

With the SR, I've spent a good amount of money (some was gifted money from birthday and such), but the only stuff I've "wasted"?

1) About 7 DE razor blades, worth about $2.
2) About a 1/4 of my soap puck . . .
3) Some pre-shave/post-shave oil/lotion.

Otherwise, I have something for the money I've spent. A great looking DE razor, brush, stand, soap bowl, lathering mug, strop, Ralf Aust razor, etc. Oh, and I still do have that beard that needs shaving, but after a great shave this morning, I can probably skip a few days without any notice . . .

Wow, 1 shave in and I'm hooked!!! Very minimal bloodshed, so I'm considering this one a win. I can't wait to step up to a big boy razor though. The dovo shavette is okay, but feels pretty flimsy. I can only imagine that a real sr feels much more natural when in hand. I've been going back and forth on getting a sr for several months, and now I wish I would not have waited so long.
