Default Brand new to this. Attempting first shave EVER tonight!

Hey guys, just wanted to introduce myself, and say Hi. My name is Matt, I'm 30 years old, and just received my first ever Straight Razor in the mail (got it from Larry at WhippedDog.com). I'll be attempting my first wet shave tonight (well as much as I'm comfortable with, I've read all the stickies). I look forward to slowly mastering this art, and getting some of the best shaves of my life in the months and years to come.

Here's to hoping I don't look like a murder victim after I'm done tonight.

Kind of a pointless post, but eh, who knew a full grown man would be this excited about "shaving".

    Welcome!

    And what pixelfixed said!

MightyMCY welcome to SRP. If yoiu think you are excited you should have seen this octogenarian's anticipation of my first shave 13 months ago. If any one had been in the same room with me they might have called the EMP's.

Glad to see you are planning to take it slow. It is always nice to meet someone that understands this is not a race and that each step must be conquered before going on to the next. Leave honing for at least 10 months, if that's what you eventually want to do along with the shaving. Face mapping, good lather building, correct stropping and edge maintenance are of the first order in that order I would say (switch lather building and stropping for better order). Don't forget the library and the videos and all the forum members that can most likely answer any of your questions.

Again, welcome to the roller coaster ride of a forum.

Been going steady since May. I have two razors from Whipped Dog! Just go slow. Practice the strokes for all of the areas you plan to shave with a butter knife or taped edge razor. You'll be surprised how awkward some of the contortions needed are, even thought they look simple on the videos...

    Best of luck!

Yes - what pixel said, soon you won't be able to imagine shaving any other way...it takes time, but it just keeps getting better and more fun the longer you're at it.

Relax, take your time, and enjoy yourself....

Welcome to SRP. I learned how to shave first with a straight razor over 30 years ago and when I picked it up again earlier this year I didn't realize how much I had missed it. I still look forward to my next shave and it isn't a chore that cartridge shaving is.

Wow...thanks for all the responses. It's awesome to see such an active forum for something that until a couple weeks ago I didn't realize had such a cult following at all. I look forwards to getting to know each of you, and being manly as hell with you as well
