Thread: Is Timor A Good Brand?

I am thinking of buying this Timor Hamburg Ring Straight. The main criteria is that it is within my price range. Upon receipt of the razor, I will then send it off for honing.

Is Timor a respected brand?

No. They are plagued with geometry problems. There are a few of the pro honers that won't take them. I have one and it came with geometry problems as is typical. I would say go to a different brand. Dovo, Ralf Aust, Theirs Issard, Boker, there are quite a few. For the minor price difference on a new razor look to the other brands. Also when looking at blades make sure that the shop is making them truly shave ready. There are some spectacular deals that go through the classifieds here.

Ya. we have been over this subject many times. Vintage, good. New, not so much!
Hit that search box above right and put in a search for Timor. Read up what has been determined in many threads!

Bob, keep an eye on the classifieds here. You will find many razors that will be in or close to
your price thresh hold with the Timor. Steer clear of the Timor. If you see a razor in the classifieds feel free to talk to the seller or ask another member what their thoughts are on the razor. We pride ourselves on helping new wetshavers have a positive experience.

Thank you all very much, I will look at other brands. My plan now is to buy a new straight razor. Send it off for honing. Then learn how to shave with it.

Keep in mind that an older Timor is top-notch. Lots of old marques are being used on new-production razors as names are bought out, etc. Quality is questionable in several. If in doubt, just ask!

I did look in the classifieds, as suggested by lz6. I decided on an Oxford razor "Germania razor works 5/8" sold by Airportcopper. Apparently, Oxford is a good name in razors, based on my searching the forums. The main motivation for the purchase was the price and the statement that the razor was honed by someone. Hopefully, the razor will shave well and with practice I will master the art.

If you buy a new razor from good vendors, you don't have to send it out. They hone it for you. Straight Razor Designs is one of those.

It's always a best policy to buy razors from those who actually USE them.

Also, do try the razor AS you receive it, wipe gently but do NOT strop a true shave-ready edge the first time.


Start practicing stropping as soon as possible, THAT's where many issues arise. Learn slow and proper, speed comes with practice- thousands upon thousands of laps up and back. Reading isn't doing. Mix it up. Do some, read some (see vids too), Do some more. Helps accelerate the learning process and may nip bad habits.
