Default Choosing a Username on SRP

This thread is directed to any lurkers and those looking to Join the SRP brethren.

May I offer a humble word of advice:

Think long and hard about choosing your usernames. Once a username has been established, your stuck.

Many have come to regret their initial choice of usernames here on SRP. Why? Primarily, because during the course of your journey, you will come to make friends and you will come to address people by their first names as well as signing posts with your first name.

So, instead of choosing the name "Trackfishgelt82", it might be wise to consider something a bit more familiar for others to recognize you by in the future, like "BobNH" or the like.

I really hope this helps save someone frustration.

    Respectfully,

    Simon

I was going to use "ToughGuy", but I was scared that my wife might see it.

Or a pun/variation on your first or last name, says R Razorfeld.

That's funny. It struck me as an afterthought. I didn't spend enough time thinking on that one. But, I did keep it close enough to my real name as, during the course of my lurking, I could tell right away that she was going to be the one.

I'd be more concerned if your town bully saw it.

While I agree in general can I add that people should also give some thought to their online identity security too.

SRP is, by and large, a public forum and as such data can be mined from it - some of that mining can be used for nefarious purposes. Always be aware of the kinds of information you might be giving when you post - over time a picture can be built up about you and you may well be rather surprised at the sorts of detail it contains.

Not trying to be overly alarmist here, just a little food for thought.

    James.
