Default Need a honemeister for first razor

    Hello ladies and gents,
im new to wet shaving, ive been using a double edge razor from target(really want a merkur futur) and recently thought about trying a straight shave. My wife said something to her grandmother who decided to dig out her late husband's old straight which has been in their family for several generations and gave it to me. It was in pretty bad shape so i did a little work to it(i know you guys say newbs shouldnt even try to hone, but i wanted to see a usable edge before i sent it out for honing).
its a tennis brand razor and im looking for a honing service and estimated cost.

    thanks to all.

First, change your bio to show where you are. Mentors abound all over the country. All capable on putting a fine edge on that nice family heirloom of yours. Along with many and good advice on how to use it, what to watch out for and a plethora of conversation on the art/skill of straight razor shaving. The cost on that might be a couple gallons of gas and your time (if the mentor imbibes a six pack of favorite brew as a bribe might be nice). The classifieds have info on pro honers and their costs.

Good going. Based on what I read in your adjusted bio you will fit in just fine. There are a lot of brush makers and wood workers as well as leather workers - all doing beautiful work. They will become apparent as you read the posts. Your skills as a jeweler with be put to good use in learning the precise skills associated with this art/hobby of ours. I'm originally from Chicago many, many years ago and now live in Oregon. I'm sending you a friend request to be your first SRP friend of record.

Welcome to SRP. There is a fella by the name of Lynn I hear he is pretty decent at honing if you wanna send it out. I would go the way of mentor if you can. They can teach about honing and everything else under the sun. Plus you get to meet someone new and awesome! I myself need to look for a mentor in my area.

Razor rich, but money poor. I should have diversified into Eschers!

Thanks for the responses everyone. Unfortunately, a member search found 1 result for my area, and i dont think hes been very active. Im eager to get started, but realize patience is a virtue. I have made arrangements to send my razor out for honing.
    Thanks again everyone.
