Default Biggest lie I have ever told! - Unknowingly

Darling (I said to my wife), these straight razors look a great idea. These Gillete Mach 3 things are costing a fortune and only last about 4 shaves. At £3.5 a week that's over £150 and year, I said with a confident air. A straight razor would be such a saving. One off purchase 1 razor, 1 Hone bit of soap all done until I am wrinkly and old. My a$$ ! This hobbie / pass time is so addictive. First razor from lynn nice and sharp and after 2 weeks I am starting to shave loads better. Even starting some against the grain stuff, deep breath and complete silence required.

So $150 dollars in seams great I have all the gear I will even need. I will save a fortune. Then something odd happens you start reading this forum called SRP and this other thing called ebay. So I started looking at some old razors they look fun I will buy one its only £10 what a bargin. Then these guys seam to be talking about parosso shave soap and pre-shave treatment better get some of that, that would improve my technique ( its all about the gear not my crap technique :-) ). Then I started to notice little tiny "bites" in my blade, over stropping? I know, i think to myself I can sort that I have been reading about those Naniwa 12K stones there supposed to be great. I had better order one £79 later there is one in the post.

I have now noticed that maybe my bathroom isn't going to be big enough for all this shaving stuff so I think we had better move house. Legal fees, new house, moving costs - maybe an extra £200,000.

I have only been at this 2 weeks! Gillete mach 3 now looks bl**dy cheep but very very dull. Is there a form of medication that I can take to get me over this obsession?

Sure you can escape. Steep angle on the blade, plenty of pressure, draw a line ear to ear.

Best known cure is to move 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle, out of radio, telephone and TV range, let alone shortwave (only take dead batteries with you), forget the dog team, you hike in, live off the land and maybe, maybe you will enact a cure. Good luck (he said sarcastically).

My favorite 'lying' example was given by Mrs. Lillian Carter when her son Jimmy, was president of the USA. A NY Times reporter had come to interview Ms Lillian shortly after her son President Carter had told the American people, "I will never lie to you." Ms Lillian greeted the female reporter cordially and the interview began. Somewhere along the line the reporter asked, "Does Jimmy ever lie ?"

"White lies," Ms Lillian replied. "What are white lies?", the reporter asked. Ms Lillian responded, "Well you know how I greeted you saying how happy I was to see you, and how lovely you look ? Those are white lies."

I'm pretty remote. Perhaps if you could get somewhere with no internet and no cell service. Those places are getting harder to find. Good luck. Eventually you will find a place of contentment, or at least that my story and I'm sticking to it.

That's was my "plan" when I started too. I wish you the best as you try to control your rationalizations. so far, I am failing at all attempts, BUT, shaving makes me happy! It never has before.

Haroldg48 it just struck me after reading your post that I have been rationalizing the whole experience and that is quite simply nuts. I think it may have become irrational when I swapped a razor that gilette have spent years making as safe as possible for a professionally honed blade that I choose to drag down my face near many of my vital blood supplies. The members of this forum then discuss ideas for making the things even sharper. So I think rational thought went out the window with the whole concept!

Loads of fun and I used to hate shaving everday. Sometimes i know shave twice jsut for the fun of it. My wife is complaining that I am taking longer in the bathroom than her though!
Its a unique time in the Universe that matter created in a sun is able to look up into the nights sky and appreciate how pretty stars are.

No escape now, sorry. Mine started with a collection of DE razors, now down from 30 to 8. Straight razors up from 1 to 40! Hones now at 10 with another confirmed as on the way from Japan. Yes it'll definitely save you money you keep telling yourself! I won't even mention the strops or the soaps creams, pre shave, aftershave shaving bowls and scuttles. Then there's the shaving brushes on and on it goes..............
