For stropping issues you may want to look at this thread
    http://straightrazorpalace.com/strop...st-2012-a.html
the other thing is what kind of razor are you using and has it been honed to shave ready?

    linuxuser,

I've started this response three times and each has failed as to "how to respond". Check this thread and others you can find using the search function at the top right of the page. http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...azors-com.html

I hope your experience is better, but I'm not optimistic!! Which razor/package did you get. A link would be helpful!!

Welcome to the forum, and know, that we are all here to help.

    Best Regards,

From what I've read in the links sorry to say that what you got is a letter opener and not going to be any good for shaving.

I don't know anything about the razor you got however the other items will be fine for your straight shaving experience, especially in the early learning stages.
You can get a properly honed and shave ready razor from a number of sellers here - one I would recommend trying for a budget priced razor from is one of our members Larry at Whipped Dog Straight Razor Shaving Equipment He has a good selection of deals from the beginner to the experienced shaver.
For some help with Stropping have a look at this video from another of our members Straight Razor Place - Stropping Video
Hope this helps you in your quest for knowledge.

If concerned about the legitimacy of a product post a link and we can make sure that you get a good item that will serve the purpose so you don't get stung again. Unfortunately too many of us get caught this way in the beginning

I doubt that the strop is of sufficiently good quality for a proper razor, but the van der haagen soap (a dollar at walmart) is not the worst, and the brush may do the job if it doesn't fall apart (that's what these cheap boar brushes tend to do sometimes right away, sometimes in few months).
