Default first post ... and a dilemma

hey guys, i’m a long time lurker but a first time poster. i’ve been shaving with a DE for a few years now and have always wanted to take up straight shaving but didn’t have the time due to my job to devote to learning. recently things have changed and i’ve decided to make it a priority. after a lot of research and review reading i decided last week to go with a 6/8 dovo best quality with blond scales. i had intended to order it from SRD since it comes honed by lynn and would be good to go straight out of the box. unfortunately at the time i made the decision SRD was out of stock but knife center was not so i ordered from them instead. of course as luck would have it the day that my razor shipped from knife center SRD listed it as being in stock. i decided to go ahead and order from SRD and send back the one from knife center.

    now the dilemma part….

i’m having a hard time getting around to returning the KC razor. the money isn’t an issue and i can afford to keep it so i’m flirting with the idea of keeping both razors just in case i do something that would require my razor to be re-honed like hitting the tap or the counter. basically i’m looking for a little advice on how i should proceed. should i just keep the SRD razor and send back the KC razor as originally intended and pick up a second as i become more proficient/comfortable? should i keep both and send the KC razor out to be honed? OR should i send the KC razor back and order a second one already honed from SRD? decisions, decisions right? thanks in advance for any and all suggestions!

Its always a good idea to have two razors. Like you said if you send one out to be honed you will have a back up.

You want to have well honed razor for shaving, so keep the SRD razor. The other one will likely not be quite to spec from the factory, but could be brought there by additional honing.

It's really up to you. Having two of the same razors makes it simpler when you decide to hone the factory edge one - you have a benchmark for the exact same razor.
However, having multiple of the same razor is also boring, most people here like to have a variety.

So, are you the kind of person who orders the same lunch every day because you like predictability, or you're the kind who gets bored with the same thing and prefers variety? Chances are the same thing will transfer to razors.

2 razors at least. Keep the one you already bought and send it to Lynn for a hone. The darn things are hard to keep in stock so I don't think he would mind.

Since they are the same razor and your SRD razor came with a Free Honing Certificate I'd shoot SRD an email and see if they'd let you use it on the Knife Center razor and BAM you are then sitting with 2 razors honed by SRD allowing you to use one until it is ready to go back in during which time you switch to the other... And so on.

Pretty cool problem to have overall, huh, two brand new razors and now what to do?!

I advise a 3rd and 4th razor for good measure.

I can hear Mr. Bogart now....
Of all the mail boxes in the world it had to be mailed to mine.....
you already have it, you will have to pay return post and possibly a restocking fee.
I would personally just get it honed so you have your back up,
and when the time comes you can sell it if you choose to expand your selection.
    ultimately the choice is yours.

Skip lunch a few days to ease the financial burden.

If you can keep your razor count at TWO, you sir then, are a stronger man than most.

It would be cool if you keep both and get a case. That way you would have a cased pair.

Send the second one for honing and you'll be set.
