Good question...I sent it out but it came back without scratches so tape on I guess? Does that affect what I should be doing?

IMO, yes. Tape vs. no tape honing is a contentious subject, though I stand to be corrected, but if a bevel is set using tape or no tape, generally, you stay with what you honed with from the bevel set right up through finishing. So.... how the bevel was originally set has, in my experience, directly affected my honing. Any 'tique store or ebay razor I receive gets a bevel set, so I know what's going on.

My first hone was a 12K Naniwa SS and a Nagura slurry stone. My razors at that time improved, but marginally. When I went back and set the bevel with a 1K stone, then honed up the ladder with fresh tape on each level, I had dramatic improvement.

Also, I'll wait for comment on the scratches on the spine, but Lynne Abrams hones without tape for all his customers I gather from his videos. So, to each his own?? I dunno, but some of the razors I have do have enough spine wear to begin with.

For me to practice means that I have to hone up some razors from bevel set up more than once. So, for me, it makes sense to protect the spine.

I hope that makes some sense and, like I said, I stand to be corrected by my seniors.

Maybe if you look at your edge under magnify it could be shiny and scratch less too :<0) I would ask who honed it about tape.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

If in doubt use tape. Worst that happens is you set a micro bevel which should only make it easier for you. Good luck
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

Everything came in and worked wonderfully. Shout out to gssixgun for the great 'how to' video on the barbers hone.

The CrOx and FeOx was a nice finish to the refresh, my edge was smooth and sharp after 10 minutes of easy maintenance. I've never used chromium oxide alone so I cannot speak to the (in)efficacy of the iron oxide.

I suspect I will be able to get along for a while with these two items until I get the itch to hone a new razor from scratch.
    crouton976 and Siguy like this.

Minus any unforeseeable accidents or mis-strops or something, you'd be correct.

Just don't get any more razors and you won't have to worry about any more hones. Let's just see if you can do that If so, then you'll have succeeded where many have failed, including myself and will be well deserving of a tip of my hat

I'm glad things are working for you. Shave on!
