Thread: What blade for lining and precise "drawing"?

Hello everybody,

Noob here. I always wanted to get a straight razor for shaping up my beard and mustache. What's your recommendation for a nice piece that's not going to shave my whole face, but will fill my heart with a nice feeling.

A few criteria/questions:

• 50-100$ budget
• what size? (if I just cut corners, is a smaller size recommended? as I said, I'm looking for precision)
• nice design, quality blade (of course)

Anything else I should know?

Have you thought about a Shavette type?

I bought a 3/8 for stuff like that but any size that does the job will work. Seeing you're new I wouldn't go lower than 4/8.

I recommend a 9/16", spike-point, American-made wedge.

You can usually find any number of affordable, nicely-restored examples, here in the SRP Classifieds.

A good choice would be a Union Cutlery "Spike". There are many others like this one, and all are maneuverable, take-and-hold an edge, and get into those "hard to reach" areas (like between one's nose and the top of a moustache).
