Thread: New to shaving the proper way

Hey peeps,

I'm new to straight razors since a friend of me got me one for my birthday.
It is not the most expensive razor out there but I guess it will be fun to learn how to use it.
All I need is to get it honed and get some shaving soap to get started learning! I've read most of the beginner tutorials out here and can't wait to get started.
I'm thinking of getting some honing stones for my knives and for my new straight razor, I got my eyes set on a DMT D6C, DMT D6E and a Belgian Coticule.
Getting hold of any bigger DMT's or lower grit whetstones is quite expensive here.
Any thoughts are appreciated

I learned two very important things from this site. so far

Stretching the skin and a light pressure.

There are many more, but these made the biggest in enjoying my shave.

Hi and welcome. With those hones you should be able to get a razor shave ready as long as the coticule is an 8k or above stone as not all can be used to finish. Good luck and any questions just ask. Ed

I would say your first acquisition should be to find a mentor. We have a growing membership of folks from the Netherlands, do some scouting & I hope you can find someone nearby to help you along...sure makes the journey smoother.
