Default A noobs thoughts so far....

I did a light hone job on my vintage Ern. Before the hone It passed the HHT but it was a little sketchy. Now, best I can tell, from reading, it passes all the sharpness tests. I didn't go crazy with the hone, just a few swipes on an 8k and 12k stone followed up with a canvas strop with green paste and then the old leather strop. I tested it on my forearm and it cut through the hair like butter. On to the face. The only thing I have to compare it to is my CJB with Feather pro blades. The Ern seems to have to work a little harder to get through my beard but the end result seems comparable.
I don't know if I will be a daily straight razor shaver. Seems like both my SE's struggle to get my chin and under nose cleanly shaven and cutting though those area's are really rough.
I like the end result my DE gives me but I do enjoy the challenge of the SE. I can see why so many try and give up, it takes patience.

One thing that totally amazes me it how crap cartridge razors ever beat out DE razors. My Edwin Jagger outperforms any cartridge razor I have ever used,

Yep, me too. If you keep on learning your hones, especially learning your strop and how to manipulate that straight through a well prepared beard you'll be amazed at how double edge razors ever beat out straights. Mr. Ern sure made a fine razor that'll get really sharp. Enjoy the ride.

I'd post the link to the Rage Against the Machine video but it has cussing in it...

Also, I think the requiring patience thing is also why some stick at it, it's a great art to master. You WILL get better at the problem areas yet I understated why some guys with really dense thick hair would rather use a DE; and DEs are very cool nice razors as well, much better than a plastic thingy...

I'm not surprised the ERN isn't as sharp as a Feather, the latter is mighty sharp! But as long as the ERN shaves well and comfortably, you've done a good job. Honing takes, in my opinion, a lot of practice.
