Default Recommendations for a beginners setup

Thanks to the awesome members here at the SRP I was talked out of wasting $80 on a bogus starter kit. I now need to acquire a decent razor and strop for $80. Any suggestions?

I have read a few posts about the sight unseen razors from whipped dog for $40. This is my front runner at the moment. Any thoughts?

How about a good strop in the $30 range? I have found a few in that range but nothing that is 3in wide.

    Thanks for the input.

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

That is probably what I will do. Not sure about the 2in strop though.

2 inches is plenty good... Trust me you will trash your first strop within the first year of stropping

You are still going to need to do an x stroke on a 3" strop, so you may as well get a 2" if you are on a tight budget.

And learning on a 2" will reenforce the x-stroke more. If you start on a 3" you may tend to just go up and back without the x-ing. Then at a later date you may get a 2" and have to learn it again. The 2-2 1/2" strops IMO should be mandatory to learn on. It reinforces good technique.

Ill second the poor mans strop its not the prettiest thing but its completely functional and dont forget your brush and soap, good prep makes a world of difference. You may also check the classified section here, ive picked up a couple georgous razors that are great shavers for under 40 each and with a little time spent browsing through you will probably find a great deal too.

For 80 I think your going to be pretty confined to your choices. Either whipped dog or the classified are about it. Star shaving might have a cheap strop but am unsure on the price.
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed
