Thread: shaving a balloon

is shaving a balloon with lather on it really a good way to practice shaving your face? lol if you pop the balloon seems like you would get a mess but at least it would not be a bloody one.

I doubt it. can't see how it would help.

I have heard it said that it was one of the exams for barbers back in the day. I have no idea if it is true. Perhaps some that have the old barbers manuals would be able to say for sure.

Yeah, it was a barber school staple up until the early sixties. I can't comment on the usefulness of the practice, though.

I actually have an old barbers manual from 1950 and it makes no mention of the "balloon test" here's a picture of the manual. When I get access to a scanner I will post the two chapters on straight razors and shaving for you all to have a gander at

I heard of this but I just didn't see the benefits. It might work for others. I think I focused on keeping my concentration high and maintaining a low angle. I took my time. I know some people recommend to shave a portion of your face at first. I just shaved the whole face and enjoyed the learning curve. I try not over think it.

I just saw or read something on a barber school and the teacher made straight razors sound like nuclear devices. (sad) But he told the commentator, all students had to shave balloons before he would even let them near a real face.
