I suppose it's one thing to shave yourself for the first time and another to shave some else, professionally. Still, I think shaving fuzz off a peach would be more practical.

I totally agree with the shaving of peach fuzz being more practical!

I think the whole idea a shaving a balloon is that in IMO it would be easier with a fully honed razor to pop a balloon then it would be to cut skin...On the other hand a dishonest could just dull the razor on a strop before taking he test. I guess the teacher would have to inspect the razor before & after testing.

Similar idea as the school of 7 bells in Bogota, Colombia. That's where you go to be an expert pickpocket. They have a dummy rigged up with bells and if you set any off you fail the final exam.

My local barber trained in Italy in the 70's says that's how they all learned.

I think it would be more of learning to shave without having the feedback of the blade on your own face (feeling the pressure and angle of blade and such), making it easier to learn to shave someone else rather than learning to shave yourself. this is just a wild guess though

My dad trained as a barber in the 1940s. He told me that they shaved lather off of rubber balloons to learn how light a touch should be used when shaving someone.

I feel the best practice for something is to do it. If you want to climb well, climb. If you want to shave balloons well, shave balloons...

If you want to shave well, shave.
