At the risk of sounding lazy: I will probably just take them to the knife shop. $5 a piece. And besides. How often would they need honing?

Your straight shaving career will be short lived, after shaving with a straight, honed at the knife shop.

never heard of that paste but you could do a search and see what comes up. Maybe try it on balsa to start with. +1 to knife honing causing issues. If he hasn't been doing straights before I wouldn't be letting him start now.

The blade shop is a barber supply store. LOL I think he knows what he doing. He also sell knives and scissors. He's a retired barber. He opened the shop 1 block away from a cosmetology and beauty academy. Pretty smart cookie.

+1 to all the advice given so far. All I can add is ..... just like medic school, all the reading and studying is just to prepare you to become a wet shaver, the actual learning comes when you venture out on your own. Most of all, Have Fun!!

Learning on the fly. I just had my friend round off and dull the point. Just trying to avoid another bloodletting. lmao

I personally prefer a rounded or muted tip, works better for me
