Default Well finally was able to make first attempt.

As some of you may recall from the member introductions section, I bought a straight from SRD about a week or so ago and due to job my job (work second shift and have been doing 12s lately) I haven't had the time to really watch the DVD or really slow down to take the time for the first shave with the new straight.

Well woke up this morning, after only 3 hours sleep. Couldn't get back to sleep and figured I was up, awake and had plenty of time, may as well give it a go. Had about 3-4 days growth going in since I hadn't bothered shaving since sometime this weekend. Strop, hot towel, lather, hot towel, lather, and ready to shave. Things went fairly well. I disregarded the advice I've seen some give to just try one area the first time. I wasn't having too much trouble so I went ahead and did my whole face. End result? There were some patches that I didn't really get but overall was able to shave off most of my whiskers without a real problem. I put the hot towel back to my face, no red dots on the towel indicating I nicked myself. Re-lathered my face and went over it with a DE to just clean up. Hot towel again, this time one or two tiny pin drops. So ironically I nick myself with the DE not the straight. Then a quick once over with an alum block.

Shave was with Taylors Lavender soap, the new Ralf Aust 5/8, a Vulfix best, and my regular DE.

Oh, not sure why pic is sideways... Is correctly oriented on my computer but when uploaded it is rotated.

sounds like a good start. Hope you have some more time to practice your technique.

Glad you enjoyed it! When I was first moving from DE to straight I had similar experiences. I chalked them up to being extra careful with the straight while just trying to finish with the DE still elated with my success on the straight and really paying attention with the DE.

Your pic was likely portrait and the software on site rotated it into landscape as that's the norm with most pictures ... probably.

Sounds like a nice start to an enjoyable journey. I also did the full monty for my first attempt. It's really a matter of how the first few strokes go. Good luck with the next one.
Keep your concentration high and your angles low!

Despite the high cost of living, it's still very popular.
