Myself I quit using it as test at all some time ago, I do use it as a parlor trick to impress those without a clue as to how sharp a Straight Razor actually is I love watching them go like it is impressive..
My feeling of confidence with honing soared when I junked the idea of the hanging hair test. I could never get that hair to slice, no matter how well I honed the razor. That just doesn't work for me. Guess I have bad hair or some other issue...

Yeah I played around with it today and I really just find it pointless, especially when there are as calculated above over 900 variables. I have tried it with the root going away from my hand towards the blade and vice versa. It seems to work better with the root going away from the hand because if you look at a hair under a microscope it has "scales", almost like a palm tree that will catch easier that way. But is that then a crutch or what. Also, I found that the older and drier the hair the harder it is to pass the test. Today I got a "good" result with the HHT on a razor that I was touching up and the hair even fell away silently, a first for me. I figured I would try the shave and well it sucked. Oh well.
