Beginning to wish i'd never made the bloody suggestion

I am a member of a forum where they have a rep system/karma system (+1, -1). I think the idea of karma/reputation is different to the idea of a +1 button. To me, a +1 button says 'I agree', not 'I respect your opinion'. The latter insinuates that by association 'I respect you'.

And just because I dont agree with you and your opinion, doesnt mean I dont respect it!

If its simply an issue of too many buttons, I had always wondered why the buttons were so big. But there I go starting another debate. Sometimes like I said at the start I wish I just kept my trap sh---

    Now I am just confused

Any of these buttons pressed in isolation would have a weird interpretation:

    *Warning: Tongue in cheek Alert!!*

Thanks - Thanks for that post. I neither agree with it (else I would hit the "+1" button), nor do I respect it (else I would hit the "respect" button) but thanks for posting it all the same.
    AKA the "sarcastic" button.

+1 - I agree with your post. But I do not respect it. Nor do I thank you for posting it.
    AKA the "grudging acceptance" button.

Respect - I respect your post. I don't agree with it. I don't thank you for it.
AKA the "you have a right to your opinion, I guess" button.

Then of course there could be interactions (assuming the order in which the buttons were pressed is either not important or unknowable, or both):

Thanks & +1 - Thanks for posting something I agree with but do not respect.
AKA the "thank God you took the fall for that one" combo.

Thanks & Respect - Respect! I'd just like to thank you for posting something I disagree with.
    AKA the "sycophant" combo.

+1 & Respect - I agree with and respect your post. But I do not thank you for posting it.
AKA the "I hate you, you smug smart-ass" combo.

Of course, a post could hit the mother load:

Thanks & +1 & Respect - Thanks for that post. I agree with and respect your view on this matter.
    AKA the "Jimbo" post.

    Thank you.

    +1

    Respect.

    James.

How about a 'Jimbo' button? A button which warns that sarcasm is in the post.

    Class post James, utter brilliance.

Genuine question - how does one use the reputation button? I tried and all that happened was a text box popped up and said "Spread the love before you give it to again" or some such. Can anyone direct me to the "howto" for this stuff? Is it what Robin posted earlier?

Scratch that question. I clearly was trying to either use it before it was completely implemented, or use it inappropriately, or both.

    All seems fine now.

I just noticed that if you "thank" first it will not then let you add "reputation" via the scale icon. But if you add "reputation" first, you can then also "thank". Does that sound right, or have I buggered something else up?

Well, I for one am still totally confused about what this reputation thing is! I looked for a thread explaining it, but apart from the brief posts here, I can find no information on how it works, what it does, or how we're supposed to use it...can someone point me in the right direction?

(btw, James, I keep getting the same message when I tried to play around with it to figure it out, with or without the thanks...).

I think only one man can clearly answer that question. I dont think when I started this thread the 'karma' system which gave reputation was quite what I had in mind. Its interesting and time will tell if its of any use. It seems to be something that will need long term use to take effect. But perhaps Dave could clarify for us what its for and how to use it when he gets a chance? Please Dave?

EDIT: A new thread has been opened up:

    http://straightrazorpalace.com/rules...tml#post280495

Bruno has announced the reputation bar and partially explained it. I cant help wondering though whether it might have been more helpful to simply make the announcement, link to this discussion thread and close his new announcement thread. Now we have two threads discussing the same ting. Indeed some members have already found the new thread and are making similar comments in both threads :S
