Thread: Old Weight Lifting belt Recycled

So I just came across my old lifting belt and had and idea...I no longer power lift and haven't used this in more than 5 years so a strop it has become. After some cutting, sanding, and conditioning...vuala! Anyone here ever tried this? Original belt was 6" at the widest point now it is cut down to 3"...

Novel idea. How does it compare to other strops you've used?

Well...honestly... I am new to the SR shaving and this is only the second strop I have ever used. I have 2 more supposively in the mail that I bought on eBay about 2 weeks ago, but I think it works good. I can feel the draw and all, but wish I had a local member with some more experience to tell me if is good or not. I am hoping for a Washington GTG so I can get someone to try it out. For now it seems to work though.

Well, i have lifted my share of weights, with those belts and they are quite stiff, but the outer, leather surface is smooth, i recall. It should certainly work as a starter strop, i would think...if it has noticable draw, then thats even better. I see you sanded and conditioned it...that's good, since the leather is quite raw.

What kind of leather conditioning did you use? I have had good luck with either neatfoot oil or saddle soap. The wiki section, has a great article on how to treat and repair strops...hope this is useful. http://straightrazorpalace.com/srpwi...ent_and_repair.

Once you are able to go to higher quality leathers/strops, you will certainly notice a difference in the draw, texture and general suppleness.
What part of Washington do you live in?

P.s...what are the brands of ebay strops you purchased?

I live in Gig Harbor...Western Washington. I am actually a implant to the area from Souther California about 2 years ago...I picked up a couple of the B & B strops...Not real expensive, but I didn't know either...I also have a one from Trey on the forum that he sent me to try out. So far it is nice too and BEEFY as I have told him. Are you in Washington?
