Default How do you pin scales?

I just got three new sets of scales for the razors i'm restoring. One of the blades is ready to go in.

But I don't know how to pin. I assume you put the pin in, cut it off to size, then add
in the cap and use a small hammer to flatten out the top of the pin to hold it. Am I right?
    or is there another way?

I would suggest you get a restoration CD from Bill Ellis aka Urleebird. He has a special offer for SRP members.
I know how to make scales and pin them etc but the CD is a must. This is my suggestion before you stuff anything up.

If you're interested in pinning only, do a search of the restoration forums. This subject has some up multiple times before and there is a thread somewhere which goes into great detail of how to accomplish this task.

As gary said, Bill's CD covers this as well as contains a wealth of knowledge, I'd recommend this also.

I did some searches, but couldn't actually find any information on pinning. Just the results of pinnings (mostly pinnings gone wrong).

I'll be ordering bills cd at some point, but in the meantime, I'd love to get these blades in.

OK if you really want to do this go get some 1/16"brass rod and some size #0 brass washers.
Washers you can get from www.microfasteners.com The rod you can get from modelling shops etc.
You will also need a nice small pair of sharp side cutters and a small ballpeen hammer. You will be tapping not hammering.

You will acutally be making small brass rivets by hand.

When you've got all the supplies post again and I'll try to help you.

    good luck

    Gary

Well, I have the pins now, that'll do, no?

I'll certainly go grab some rod/washers tomorrow for the future.

Nope, you need the washers as the end that you peen over holds the washer in place. The washer is on the outsie of the scale, not inside.

OK, all is clear. I've attached a basic diagram for you. Hope it helps. In future use the brass stuff, generally those kits ain't the best.
Cut the exposed ends of the pins to allow for a little rivet head.

    Cheers

Awesome. That makes everything clear. I'll give it a try tonight.
If I fail I'll go buy a small anvil or something solid to hammer on and some brass rod tomorrow.
